Mother Tongue

Alone in a carriage
Reading Beloved.
A severed head,
Then the blood.

"Where you from, man?"
"Beckenham?"
"Where you goin', man?"
"Balham."
"Where's your money?"

Awkwardly, fumbling, he fetches,
A knife.

Six
Seconds
Of
Silence.

"Only fooling."
(Fool me.)
"Easy", fists meet.
"Respect", fists meet.
In safety, later, I breathe.
Brother? Hood?
